Matala beach
Matala beach is world renowned area because in the sixties the hippies all around Europe were gathered and lived at this beach of rare beauty. The caves of Matala sheltered the Flower Children. The life style of the hippies was totally harmonized with the environment of Matala beach that inspired for them the freedom and the natural beauty.
Matala is located 71 km southwest of the city of Heraklion. The beach is awarded with the Blue Flag for 2012. The beach of Matala has a length of 300 meters and is with sand and with few rocks on the bottom. The beach is organized with umbrellas, sun beds, showers, lifeguard, first aid, beach volley, water sports. Close to the beach there are many restaurants, taverns, mini-markets, and many hotels and apartments. The beach of Matala is one of the beaches of Heraklion that you have to visit.
