Gournes are located 14km east of Heraklion tonw. Gournes beach starts from the port were is sandy with no amenities and continues eastward beneath the former U. S. base, which dominated until recently with sand as well.
Here the beach is organized with umbrellas, shower chairs and some canteens and is very close hotels. In the space that housed the base now is the Thalassokosmos or Cretaquarium, which is the largest aquarium in southern Europe and attracts thousands of visitors daily from all over Crete. Here also lies the Exhibition Centre of Crete.
