Kolymbari
Kolymvari is a traditional seaside Cretan village with 950 residents (census 2001). Kolymvari Is located 25 km west of Chania town, and has a secure port with slide for those that have a boat for a day trip in Afrata beach or in the fantastic beach of Balos.
In Kolymvari area you can visit the Monastery of Panagia Odigitria, known as "Moni Gonias". The monastery has a long history that goes back to the 9th century when it was founded. It is at this current condition from the early 17th century when the monks moved for safety reasons here. The monastery has always been focused to the resistance to all occupiers of Crete. At the 15th August the monastery celebrates the Virgin Mary and crowds from all over Crete attend the ceremony. Near the monastery has been created the Orthodox Academy of Crete, a very great orthodox ecclesiastical institution. The beach Kolimbari is a pebbly beach well organized with sun beds, umbrellas, water sports, and several taverns, restaurants, mini markets, cafes. Kolymbary offers all the possibilities of accommodation, apartments, 5 star hotels, but also villas with private pools. Like all the beaches on the north side of Chania is very well connected with Chania town with the Public bus service (KTEL) Chania. While visiting the local taverns don’t miss the opportunity to taste the famous slipper lobster, known as kolochtipa.
